GAMMA Meeting Schedule & Activities 2013

GAMMA meets on the 1st and the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 7:30pm in the ACON building, 414 Elizabeth Street, Surry Hills. We aim to get there about 7:15pm so we start on time. Meetings usually end between 9:00 and 9:30, with most people opting to have coffee with us and extending the chat a bit longer.

Speaker: Tom Reeve
Tom has been involved in all stages of the Family Law process. In addition he manages a large team of family lawyers with varying case profiles and is actively involved with various community organisations and projects through his work in Family Law and Migration.
Tom heads the Family Law team at Marsdens Law Group.

Timothea has worked as a psychotherapist, educator and workplace trainer for the past 20 years. Her interest in mindfulness has been deepened by being a long-time student in the practices of Aikido, yoga, and meditation.

Speaker: Dr Kylie Agllias
Kylie is a lecturer in social work at the University of Newcastle. She has an impressive academic profile, and among her many areas of interest and expertise are family estrangement, grief and loss, groupwork and self-care (stress, burnout and vicarious trauma).

This is the first of a series of 3 sessions with Eric Hudson for 2013, based on the 3 sections of the book "The Velvet Rage'.

'The Velvet Rage', by Alan Downs: This engrossing book acknowledges the fact that many gay men still journey out of shame and then spend time compensating for that shame before finally finding authenticity. This book has been called 'a self-help manual' for gay men and Eric will analyse the practical and inspired strategies it offers to stop the cycle of avoidance and self-defeating behavior gay men often face. There is abrief summary at The Velvet Rage.

Tonight Eric will deal with the first part of the book, entitled "Overwhelmed by Shame".

Speaker: Roxanne McMurray
Roxanne has a background in communications and strategic planning and has been involved in the NSW non-government women's health sector for 14 years in health promotion, client support and management. She has worked with the NSW Women Partners of Bisexual Men Service for 12 years and in 2006 co-authored a book for women partners of same sex attracted men - the first Australian publication of its kind.

The group runs men's workshops that delve into topics such as masculinity, not being afraid of sexuality, and the value of centring yourself spiritually. Sounds difficult?
